A rare original sofa bed designed by Robin Day for Hille circa 1960. Robin Day was one of the most acclaimed and significant British furniture designers of the 20th Century. His influential furniture designs introduced materials such as plywood, steel and plastic into the modern design world. The sofa bed as a sofa has clean lines, black steel legs/feet & a teak afromosia frame & very rare attachable/detachable arms. The seat & back have both been professionally reupholstered, with new foam & the outer in grey wool. To create the sofa bed, the back flips over with an easy action to create a small double bed. Stylish and minimalist & originally called the Convertible Bed-Settee, this piece was specifically designed with young people in mind who often lived in smaller spaces where dual-purpose space-saving furniture was a must and for this reason it won a Design Centre Award in 1957. A superb piece of iconic furniture & in good condition.
